Vehicle Damage

To minimize the risk of being accused of causing damage to the rental vehicle, consumers should always take the following precautions:

  • Inspect the vehicle upon pickup together with a rental company employee. Any visible damage should be recorded in the check-in/check-out report to avoid potential disputes later.
  • Inspect the vehicle upon return together with a rental company employee. If the vehicle is returned in good condition without damage, this should be noted in the check-in/check-out report.
  • It is highly recommended to return the vehicle during business hours. If the car is returned outside business hours, there is a higher risk of being held responsible for damage discovered later, as the consumer remains liable until the vehicle is inspected.
  • Familiarize yourself with the rental company’s damage assessment policy before using the vehicle. This includes understanding the process for disputing damage claims and how charges are determined.

What to Do If You Are Charged for Damage?

If you are charged additional fees for damages, you should:

  1. Contact the rental company and request a clear explanation of the charges.
  2. If you disagree with the charges, ask for supporting documentation, such as:
    • The check-in/check-out reports from pickup and return.
    • Photographs showing the reported damage.
    • Invoices or repair cost documentation confirming the expenses.
    • If repairs have not yet been completed, request a damage cost estimation table.
