Cross-Border Shopping

The European Union’s internal market provides consumers with extensive opportunities to purchase goods in other member states. To ensure a smooth shopping experience outside Latvia, it is important to keep in mind a few key points that can help in case of a dispute with a seller or service provider:

  • Always keep the purchase receipt, as it serves as proof of your contractual obligations with the seller.
  • Ensure the chosen product has all the necessary features and properties to serve your intended purpose.

Before making a purchase, the seller must provide clear and understandable information (unless it is already obvious from the context), including:

  • The main characteristics of the goods or services.
  • The identity of the seller.
  • The final price, including all taxes and, if applicable, any additional delivery costs.
  • If applicable, the terms of payment, delivery, execution, the time frame for delivery or service provision, and how complaints are handled.
  • A reminder of the consumer’s legal rights in case of a defective product, as well as information on warranty repairs and commercial guarantees.
  • If the contract is for an indefinite period or renews automatically, the contract duration and termination conditions.
  • If purchasing digital content, information on its functionality and compatibility with hardware and software (if known to the seller).

If a defect is discovered in a purchased product that was not caused by the consumer, the consumer has specific rights under EU regulations.

EU law states that the seller is responsible for any product defect for two years from the date of delivery.
