Travelling by bus and coach

Passengers travelling by bus or coach within the EU are protected under EU Regulation 181/2011, which establishes key rights in cases of delays, cancellations, and other disruptions.

Below is an overview of your rights when travelling on journeys of more than 250 km.

Assistance in case of delay or cancellation

If your journey is cancelled or delayed by more than 90 minutes, and the total trip duration exceeds three hours, the carrier must provide adequate assistance, including:

  • snacks, meals, and refreshments
  • hotel accommodation (if necessary, for up to two nights, with a limit of 80 EUR per night)

Exceptions apply in cases of extreme weather or major natural disasters.

Reimbursement or rerouting

If your journey is overbooked, canceled or delayed by more than 120 minutes, you are entitled to:

  • full ticket reimbursement or
  • rerouting to your final destination at the earliest opportunity.

Compensation for delay and cancellation

If your departure is delayed by more than 120 minutes, or if the journey is canceled and no alternative is offered, you are entitled to 50% compensation of the ticket price.

Passenger information

Carriers are required to inform passengers about their rights in the event of cancellations or delays.

Protection in case of accident

In the unfortunate event of a road accident leading to death, injury, or loss/damage of luggage, passengers are entitled to:

  • compensation and immediate practical assistance
  • up to two nights of hotel accommodation (80 EUR per night limit)

Free assistance for disabled passengers

Passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility are entitled to free assistance at terminals and on board. This includes:

  • help with boarding and disembarking
  • free transport for an accompanying person, if necessary
